Week 16 Announcement

  • I’ve added calculated totals, for ease of reference, to the gradebook in Teams for your homework, quiz, and presentation score accurate as of 3:00 pm 12/6. Each is normalized to be out of 100. Remember your final grade is computed as 1/4 from each of these and 1/4 from your final project.

  • If you want to turn things in for revision, be sure to have it in by the Exam Date - December 9 at 9:00 am (EST). Sooner is better as I have to submit grades shortly afterwards.

  • Also, projects are due by the Exam Date - December 9 at 9:00 am (EST). If you turn your project in advance and it gets returned, you can revise it until the Exam Date.

  • Course evaluations are now open for this course. If you want me to teach more Honors courses, including possibly your future class, please be sure to communicate this in your evaluation. If we get to 75% class participation, everyone’s lowest homework score will be dropped.

  • Some project suggestions are out! Check the Teams channel for the ideas. As I mentioned before, the best project is the one you are passionate about. Let me know your thoughts and we can work together to find some direction. Projects need to be selected by the end of this month.

  • A couple of students have been having issues with feedback not attaching to their returned assignments. Let me know if you are having this problem. I will try to stick to the Teams feedback box as much as reasonably possible.

Week 6 Announcement

  • A batch of assignments are were graded on Monday and returned. I scattered the revision dates throughout next week. If you need an extension, let me know.

  • We are starting a more abstract and conceptual component of the course. The experience so far will help inform and ground you through explicit examples of general concepts. Thinking abstractly is a core function of doing mathematics and a tool that helps in any problem solving endeavour. That said, it is probably the most unfamiliar part of the course. If you need support, just reach out to me.

  • Homework 4 is now up and is due next Thursday instead of Tuesday. Apologies for the delay. Lots of proposals to write.

  • The first versions of Homework 1, Quiz 3, and Quiz 4 were returned on Friday. They due for revisions is this Friday, Sept 10. The first revisions for Quiz 1 and Quiz 2 were returned on Monday. The due date for the second (and final) revision of Quiz 2 is next Monday Sept 13.

  • Reminder: all returned individual work will be put in the UofSC OneDrive folder shared personally with me. Each group assignment has its own folder shared between the group members and myself. If you have any trouble locating any folders, just let me know.

  • I get lots of email. On the other hand, I only get MS Teams’ messages from people in this class. If you want to contact me, sending your message via Teams gives it greater prominence than an email would.

  • My office hours have changed to Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:45-8:30 and 11:30-12:15.

  • I would like to see how submitting the quiz via Teams goes. Please download and install either the

on your phone. Sign in with your UofSC ID and password. When you are done on Tuesday, scan your quiz, upload it to your university OneDrive account, and then attach it to the quiz 3 assignment.

  • For each student, I have created a shared folder with me in your university OneDrive account. I will use this return assignments. If you are having trouble with accessing it, please message me on Teams.

  • With a big assist from university IT, I have added a GitHub bot to the team for the class. The bot will report any updates to the course webpage in the webpage channel. This way you only need to keep an eye Teams to stay up to date about website changes.

Week 2 Announcement

  • Please bring a blank sheet of paper for writing your quiz.

  • If you have one, please bring a device to view webpages to class. You might find devices with a pen/pencil useful, like an iPad, but they will not be necessary.

If you have an iOS device, download the Scribble app. I have a subscription so you don’t need to buy anything.

If you don’t have a iOS device, I will post a link in Teams to the Scribble webpage for you to view in your browser.

  • I am developing the notes as course goes. If you find something confusing, please contact me and ask about it. The page is currently built with Jekyll and hosted via Github using Github Pages.

So if you feel comfortable, that is medium where you can comment. There you can point exactly to the relevant line the markdown source. Pull requests fixing typos are very welcome!
